Most of us have experienced the state of 'flow' while we are doing something we really enjoy, whether it’s reading a riveting book, playing a sport, spending time with our children. At this time we are so immersed that time slips by, life is effortless and our minds relax enough that our true Self is present. In that relaxed state the thoughts, self doubt and beliefs that cloud our mind disappear and we can truly shine.
That is being in the flow
That feeling of being totally immersed in what you are doing is not reserved for the select few. As a coach, I help my clients consciously create opportunities to get in the flow. I support, encourage and work with my clients so they are engaged and present in their daily lives.
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a professor of psychology, defined and explored the concept of 'flow' in his book, Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience. He describes his life's work as the effort to "study what makes people happy".
